CIC @ LAK 2019

CIC was one of the most visible Learning Analytics centres at this year’s international conference. Learn more about our diverse contributions.

UTS was again contributing strongly at the annual International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge (LAK). This year’s LAK was distinctive for CIC, with one of the invited keynotes being delivered by our very own  Shirley Alexander, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education & Students), who told the story of the UTS journey towards deeper engagement with data and analytics, sparked by her attendance at LAK 2012. Her call to arms was for the field to tackle the biggest challenges facing higher education, illustrated with numerous examples from CIC’s work since we launched in 2014. Truly a whole team effort!

Elsewhere at LAK… Senior Lecturer Kirsty Kitto was co-chairing the LAK Hackathon, bringing together some of the most talented researcher/developers to break new ground.

Meanwhile doctoral researcher Shibani Antonette (and research fellow Ming Liu, unable to travel but there in spirit!) were co-chairing the Writing Analytics workshop, a series of events that CIC has spearheaded since LAK16 (browse Events on our blog). Shibani also presented a paper reporting on how CIC is scaling contextualised learning analytics, jointly authored with Simon Knight and Simon Buckingham Shum [1]. In parallel, Sophie Abel was presenting her PhD writing analytics work at the Doctoral Consortium and the main Poster session [2].

Research fellow Roberto Martinez-Maldonado was co-chairing the Multimodal Learning Analytics workshop, and presenting a paper on how CIC is mapping spatial pedagogy through collaborations with academics, using sensors in the classroom [3].

CIC’s Director Simon Buckingham Shum was co-chairing the Doctoral Consortium (where 10 PhD students were selected for a day’s mentoring and networking with peers and experts), and the Analytics in Schools workshop (the second LAK forum dedicated to the K-12 sector).

Finally, CIC’s proud that the whole team served on the LAK19 Program Committee, as double-blind reviewers — and Kirsty Kitto scooped the Best Reviewer Award for the outstanding quality of her feedback to authors. Congratulations Kirsty for this awesome service to the community!
